   एक गैस स्टेशन की डकैती के दौरान पैटरसन् ने अपना सेल फोन गिरा दिया जो पुलिस को मिल गया.इस फोन से प्राप्त जानकारी की जाँच के लिए एफबीआई के नेतृत्व में 25 एजेन्सियों और 50 जांचकर्ताओं का सहयोग लिया गया .5 जून को चेवरान गैस स्टेशन पर डकैती के बाद पुलिस ने पैटरसन् और वाशिंगटन को गिरफ्तार किया. इस गिरफ्तारी के बाद पुलिस हरकत में आई , वाशिंगटन के घर से बुलेट प्रूफ सामान , चाकू , जेहाद संबंधी साहित्य तथा आक्रमण के संभावित शिकार लोगों के पते मिले . पैटरसन् ए आर 15 राइफल प्राप्त करने के प्रयास में था.
